"I certainly didn't ever think I was going to get sick... but I did"
"My life could have been very different if I didn't have health insurance and income protection insurance"
Most of us say it will never happen to us, but in Rose's case, it did, and having Income Protection insurance saved her from losing her house!
In late 2010, Rose headed into her office for what she had assumed would be an ordinary day at work. It wasn't. That afternoon the then 28 year old executive suffered a ruptured Brain Aneurysm and would spend the next three months in hospital, and another three months after that as an outpatient.
She fell over in the bathroom at her office and was unconscious for about 15 minutes. She was rushed to hospital and it took several hours of exploratory surgery to discover the bleed in her brain.
Rose then had brain surgery which was a success, however she was left unable to talk or walk. She required full time medical care for several months and after extensive rehab, she eventually regained her independence and remastered the art of walking and talking.
After a long period of time she was given the all clear from her doctor to work again, but "only for eight hours a week". She returned to her work doing two four hour stints a week but after a few months her employer let her go. She was devastated.
Financially it was testing. She had a mortgage to pay but no income to support it. Fortunately, her previous employer gave all employees Income Protection insurance as part of their package. It wasn't a huge amount of money, but she was able to pay her mortgage. Without this insurance she would have had to sell the house.
